On October 1, 2022, the ship Plastic Odyssey lifted the anchor from Marseille for a 3-year journey around the world, along the coasts most affected by plastic pollution. On board, young sailors, engineers, scientists who imagine concrete and simple solutions to transform plastic waste into a resource for populations.
After having stopped over in Senegal, Guinea and Lebanon, now heading to Latin America and Polynesia. We meet again with Simon Bernard and Alexandre Dechelotte, the founders of Plastic Odyssey, in the continuation of their adventures and their meetings with local actors of change.
By leaving Latin America for Asia, the Plastic Odyssey team is tackling a new challenge in Polynesia: trying to extract and recycle more than 10 tons of waste collected on the shores of the Henderson atoll, a small island of 38km2 holding the sad record of the highest density of plastic debris in the world. An “impossible mission” to preserve nature, raise awareness among the general public and allow the inhabitants of the Pitcairn Islands to transform this waste into building materials.
