Valley of Thieves is a horseback adventure set in Mongolia during the 1970s, an ‘Eastern’ set at the crossroads of the steppe and the taiga, between communist atheism and forest shamanism.
It is inspired by the true story of Tumur the Mountain Man, a legendary horse thief who took from the rich and gave to the poor. For the KGB, the bandit had to be captured at all costs, because he exposed the deceptions of a corrupt communist system.
By casting local nomads into the roles of their own heroes and villains, the film seamlessly blends documentary and fiction to produce an alchemy of viewing verging on magical realism.
