“A taste of freedom
For twenty-nine years now, the Val d’Isère Adventure & Discovery Festival has been inviting us to hit the road.
For twenty-nine years, a host of sailors, divers, mountaineers, sportspeople, pilots, champions, scientists, explorers and artists have taken to the stage at the Henri Oreiller Conference Centre to confirm that ‘the value of a thing sometimes lies not in what one gains by obtaining it, but in what one pays to acquire it, in what it costs’. This quote from Nietzsche opens excerpt number 38 of *Twilight of the Idols*. This passage is entitled ‘My Idea of Freedom’. It seems that no adventurer at the festival will contradict Nietzsche’s ‘idea’!
The filmmakers, explorers and competitors at the festival describe the journey that led them to their goal. It will be more or less difficult, often exhilarating, sometimes painful, always edifying.
There will be the joys and sorrows gathered along the way, the torments and the joys, the wounds, the moments of enlightenment.
Sometimes, dreams are shattered. At other times, the outcome exceeds expectations. Sometimes, the adventurers even discover themselves!
What is lost along the way, the metamorphosis that takes place (like that of a reptile), the inner alchemy, the transformation of the self: all this is the price of adventure, ‘what it costs’.
As a dream is never realised without effort, it is all the more noble for it.
When the jury awards the Golden Eagle at the end of the festival, we must bear this in mind: the sum of the adventurer’s very self that they have poured into their endeavour.
The other lesson from the Aventure & Découverte festival is that feats of endeavour sharpen the mind, strengthen sensitivity and heighten emotion. Listen to these adventurers speaking, having returned from the four corners of the world: the road inspires them! Nietzsche again (at the beginning of *Ecce Homo*): ‘The greatest agility of the muscles has always gone hand in hand with the overflow of creative force. ’ We really ought to have invited him to Val d’Isère – he, the philosopher-traveller who loved the mountains so much. But he was otherwise engaged. ‘Beyond Good and Evil’.”

On the fringes of the festival
As it does every year, the Festival is screening films outside the competition to broaden horizons. For this 24th edition, local adventurers and sports enthusiasts present: *Vélocia*, a documentary by journalist and mountain biker Lucy Paltz on the position of women in the world of cycling, as well as films featuring our avalanche athlete Léo Taillefer on skis or in the air. Paraglider Maxence Cavalade will be showing a teaser of his freefly challenge. The films will be screened during the official evening events and will be available on the Festival’s website.
Further information on the non-competitive programme can be found below.
VELOCIA
As the first documentary film entirely dedicated to women’s cycling, *VELOCIA* follows some of France’s finest female cyclists as they ride along roads and trails. Who are these women, whether amateur or professional, who are passionate about mountain biking or road cycling? What are the challenges, obstacles and hopes facing women’s cycling in 2020?
Lucy Paltz, a sports journalist and keen mountain biker, set out to meet these passionate and talented athletes who strive every day to push the boundaries of the sport and inspire younger generations.
The film will be available from Monday 19 to Thursday 22 April 2021, during the International Adventure and Discovery Film Festival. Lucy Paltz will be present at a live evening event on stage at the Val d’Isère Conference Centre to talk in more detail about her project. The date of her appearance will be announced shortly.
FLYING SPIRIT
Having set a world record for vertical drop in speed-riding, Maxence Cavalade is training to qualify and take part in the world record attempt for head-down freefly in Chicago in 2022.
For Maxence Cavalade, when the desire to push his limits takes over, the notion of difficulty seems to become a mere detail. Yet the obstacles are very real. Jump after jump, training session after training session, progress and self-reflection follow one another, linked by one constant: an awareness of the work required to achieve his goal.
Driven by a love of board sports and a constant quest for progress and learning, Maxence takes us on a four-year journey beneath his wing, sharing what drives him to soar towards a new, dizzying challenge.
From Killy With LOVE
This is a short video filmed in early April in Val d’Isère.
A project born out of a dream that I’ve been sharing with my team for the past three years: to showcase aerial and board sports through footage that nobody has ever seen before. A cracking team! Brought together through meetings with mountain and film enthusiasts. We were lucky enough to come together and have the ideal conditions to bring the project to life.
A film made entirely from scratch, with heart and a love of the mountains.
