*The Valley of Thieves* is an equestrian adventure set in Mongolia in the 1970s, an ‘Eastern’ situated at the crossroads of the steppe and the taiga, between communist atheism and forest shamanism.
The film is inspired by the true story of Tumur, the Man of the Mountains, a legendary horse thief who took from the rich to give to the poor. For the KGB, this bandit had to be captured at all costs, as he exposed the deceptions of a corrupt communist system.
By casting local nomads in the roles of their own heroes and antagonists, the film seamlessly blends documentary and fiction, creating a visual alchemy akin to magical realism.
